American University of Sharjah(AUS) Overview
American University of Sharjah (AUS) was founded in 1997 by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Sharjah, who envisioned AUS as an institution of educational preeminence in the Arab world. Thoroughly grounded in Arab culture, AUS is committed to playing an important role in the revitalization of intellectual life throughout the region.
Under the leadership of its first chancellor, Dr. Roderick French, the university laid a solid foundation for its future as an institution of academic excellence. It was granted a license by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in 1998 and held its first Student Council elections the same year. The subsequent year saw the university being granted a license by the Commission for Academic Accreditation of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
The development continued with the university launching its first graduate degree (MBA) in 2000 and holding its first commencement the following year. With the retirement of Chancellor French, the stewardship of the university passed into the hands of Dr. Winfred Thompson, who continued to pursue AUS’s mission of achieving academic excellence. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) in the US recognized this and, after a comprehensive assessment, granted accreditation to the university in 2004.
AUS achieved another landmark as it marched towards becoming one of the region’s premier research universities when the Sharjah Ruler inaugurated the new AUS Library in 2006. The very same year, the undergraduate programs then offered by the College of Engineering received accreditation by ABET, and the School of Business Administration was accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
Dr. Peter Heath brought a wealth of international experience with him when he was appointed as the university’s third chancellor in 2008. Earning renown for its competitive academic standards and multicultural campus environment, the university saw its student body cross the 5,000 mark in 2009. The next year, the AUS Bachelor of Architecture degree program became the first outside of North America to be granted accreditation by the US National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB).
In 2012, London-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), one of the world’s most trusted university rankings, named AUS among the world’s top 500 universities for the first time. In addition, Forbes Middle East ranked the AUS MBA program the best offered by a private university in the Gulf region. This strive towards excellence has been a constant feature throughout AUS’ history.
Dr. Björn Kjerfve, who served as Chancellor from 2014 until 2019, initiated a drive to strengthen the university’s research agenda. During this period, the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation (RTI) Park, adjacent to the university campus, was initiated.
The years 2016 and 2017 marked many milestones for the university. In 2016, US News ranked the School of Business Administration the top business school in the Arab world. In 2017, AUS topped the Times Higher Education (THE) list of universities with the highest percentage of international students globally, and retained the top spot in 2018. On October 4, 2017, AUS celebrated its 20th anniversary with a community gathering and awards for its “Pioneers”—the original faculty and staff members who helped in the establishment and launch of the university.
The start of the university’s third decade was marked in September 2018 by the launch of its first doctoral program, the PhD in Engineering Systems Management. In 2019, QS World University Rankings named AUS among the Top 50 Universities Under 50 Years and as the top-ranked university in the Middle East for the business and management subject category. The launch of the new Engineering and Sciences Building in Fall 2019 marked another achievement in the university’s history. That same year, Professor Kevin Mitchell was appointed the university’s fifth chancellor.
As these advancements attest, AUS is firmly grounded in principles of meritocracy and the value of academic excellence, creating graduates poised to become the innovators, thinkers, contributors and leaders of tomorrow.
